Book Country first appeared on a poster for "New York is Book Country" an annual literary event. It was inspired by the lettering of Ben Shahn on a poster protesting the 1927 execution of Italian radicals Nicolo Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti. Though apparently naive and crudley drawn, nevertheless, the letterforms effected an urgent and powerful message.
The font includes a derived lower case and an OpenType contextual feature which maintains the rhythm of the uneven baseline when characters repeat to mitigate the stiff, mechanical feeling that occurs when casual lettering is typeset.About the designer:
Daniel Pelavin is in his fourth decade of transforming and melding the images and cultural ephemera of our times into cogent and compelling messages for publishing, advertising and communication design.
Working his way up through the ranks in the legendary art studios of Detroit, in the halcyon days of the early 1970's. Pelavin apprenticed and worked with artists from the entire gamut of graphic arts professionals, including, decorative, fashion, product and technical illustrators as well as letterers, typographers and designers. Following the completion of a master of fine arts degree, he spent time teaching college courses in design, lettering and illustration before moving to New York City.
More than 30 years later, he has honed and polished his craft to become a celebrated illustrator and typographic designer with national and international clients, who shares his knowledge and experience with students and fellow professionals alike and continues to play a pioneering role in the evolution of digital art and the seamless merging of design and illustration.
A fascination with letterforms from an early age has led him to create fonts, influenced by many different of historical periods. While some are faithful to traditional forms and others reflect a unique take on idioms of the past, all are designed to be tools which provide a designer the freedom and inspiration to explore his own creative vision.
