Filmotype Modern is one of the hallmarks of the freestyle faces of the Filmotype library. This bouncy sans-serif was originally introduced in the early 1950s and captures the essence of mid-century casual playfulness.
Filmotype Modern was developed from the original font filmstrips and includes a full international character compliment, automatic ligature combinations, ordinals, fractions and a host of alternate characters in dynamic OpenType format.About the designer:
Rian Hughes studied at the LCP in London before working for an advertising agency, i-D magazine, and a series of record sleeve design companies. Under the name Device he now provides design and illustration for the advertising, entertainment, publishing, and media industries. In between assignments, he adds to his phenomenal stable of typeface designs. He has an extensive collection of Thunderbirds memorabilia, a fridge full of vodka, and a stack of easy listening albums, which he plays very quietly.
Finding itself securely at the historical crossroads between lead type and the computer revolution, the Filmotype library, developed in the 1950s and 1960s, grew to encompass several hundred fonts available to designers, providing typeface designs on 2-inch filmstrips. Filmotype initially manufactured a manual phototype machine enabling headline and display typesetting utilizing a photochemical development process, helping to revolutionize the process of advertising layout and lettering.
In 2006, Stuart Sandler and Font Diner revived the Filmotype marque, intending to create high-quality digitizations of this historic collection, adapted for the modern age.
