Sturdy and Skolar is a text serif which has been originally designed with scholarly and multilingual publications in mind. The typeface maintains its credibility while incorporating a subtle personal style, neither neutral nor conspicuous. Prominent serifs and low-contrast modulation add to its robustness, and together with relatively large x-height, they improve the typeface readability in small sizes. The Skolar family of six weights and large character set is flexible enough for complex text settings and editorial work. It becomes distinctive in bigger sizes, thus fitting corporate design demands.
There have been quite a few practical solutions introduced in the typeface. Here are some of a greater import: The capitals are rather low in comparison to the ascenders to give the typeface even texture and more space for capital diacritical marks. The structure of the typeface is strictly conventional, but the stroke modulation stylistically reflects on contemporary serifs. The italic has a shallow angle and large counters for better readability in small print. It is easily recognized but not ostentatious; it blends well with the uprights. Semibold is weighted to emphasize text blocks, where Bold is intended for word clusters. The family includes a complex set of smart arrows which can be easily keyed and combined in infinite ways using OpenType features. It includes fleuron.
Skolar has received numerous international recognitions, including the Ed-Awards competition 2008, I Love Typography’s best typefaces of 2008.About the designer:
David B?ezina, born in Brno, Czech Republic, graduated in Informatics at the Masaryk University in Brno in 2005, spent a term at the Denmarks Designskole in Copenhagen in 2004 and graduated with distinction from the MA in Typeface Design at the University of Reading (UK) in 2007. His interest in non-Latin type design and typography of multilingual and complex texts manifests in the multi-script family Skolar and Surat for Latin and Gujarati, that he started during his MA in Reading. The finalised version is expected to be released through TypeTogether in 2008.
During his time in Denmark, he has also designed the sans serif Codan inspired by the city of Copenhagen.
