Based on the lettering "Zierfische" (tropical fish) from a shop sign in East Berlin, Manfred Gensicke designed the lettering in a hand-written style. To create the font the designer expanded the signage lettering into an entire alphabet with a handwritten character. In 2011, designer Dirk Heider digitized the typeface and created a professional, useable version.
The typeface contains a number of ligatures, language-specific functions, such as umlauts and accents for the vowels and a few hidden treats as well.
About the designer:
Manfred Gensicke was born in 1934 in Berlin. He worked as an advertising illustrator, painting signs in the early 50s and 60s.In 1975 he opened his own signage business and shop in East Berlin.During this time, he designed many well-known signs and neon lettering pieces. Most of these charming pieces no longer exist, but a few are still in use around the city. Gensicke has stayed active in design and recently began working in digital typefaces.
Dirk Heider was born in 1985 in Tübingen. The now Berlin-based designer transformed the original sketches into an open type font, giving it consistency but maintaining its personal character.
