Grafika is a completely original design, done in an “Art Deco” spirit reminiscent of the 1920s and ‘30s. I designed Grafika many years ago to be typeset for title cards, and both opening and end credits for the Merchant/Ivory feature film “Savages”. After the film, the design languished in my archives until recently, when I rediscovered it. I have digitally redrawn Grafika, completing it with all the alternates, ligatures, math, foreign language support and punctuation that weren’t required of the original design for film. Grafika is strongest when set in upper and lowercase—its unique caps extending below the baseline—although all caps settings are encouraged as well.
About the designer:
You’re probably familiar with Michael Doret’s work without even knowing it. If you’ve seen his logo for the NY Knicks or one of his many Time covers then you’re familiar with the power and dynamism he has brought to the art of hand-lettering for many years. But now with the opening of his digital font foundry Alphabet Soup he is excited to have added font design to his list of accomplishments. Check out Doret’s other Alphabet Soup fonts at Veer, including Deliscript, which was awarded the prestigious Certificate of Excellence by Type Directors Club in the display fonts category for their TDC² 2010 Typeface Design Competition.
With his letterform/graphic design work Michael is an eight-time winner of the New York Art Directors Club Silver Award. in his unique typographic vision he blends elements of lettering, illustration and graphic design. The inspiration for his work has come from such diverse sources as matchbook covers, theater marquees, enamel signs, early and mid-20th century packaging, and various other artifacts of this great land of ours.
